Washington:  The central role played by the Sultanate of Oman, under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, in securing the extension of truce in the Republic of Yemen, has been hailed by President Joe Biden of the United States of America (USA).

In a statement issued by the White House, President Biden expressed his gratitude to Oman for its role in advancing peace in Yemen through talks among Sayyid Badr Hamad Al Busaidi, Foreign Minister and his American counterpart Antony Blinken and Rashad Al Alimi, President of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council.

UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg said the agreement also includes continued and extensive contacts between the concerned parties so that an expanded agreement could be reached in future.

The United Nations had announced yesterday that the Yemeni parties had reached an agreement to extend the truce for two more months.

Meanwhile, the Arab Parliament has welcomed the decision to extend the truce for two more months, including a commitment from all parties to intensify negotiations to reach a broad agreement as soon as possible.

In a statement, the Arab Parliament affirmed that the decision to extend the truce contributes to advancing efforts to reach a comprehensive settlement of the Yemeni crisis, and support initiatives for a political solution, based on the relevant Security Council resolutions, the Gulf initiative and its executive mechanisms and the outcomes of the comprehensive national dialogue that would preserve Yemen’s unity and independence as also the security, stability and prosperity of Yemen and its people.

In the statement, the Arab Parliament urged the parties to build on this positive step to achieve progress in the political process, which would lead to an end of the crisis in Yemen.
