Muscat: The Holy Month of Ramadan saw an increase in charity giving, and thousands of people are already being helped thanks to Omani generosity.
According to data from the national donations portal, donate.om, a total of OMR221,951.36 was raised from the beginning of June until the end of July 5, 2016 on the occasion of the month of Ramadan from 5,529 donors.
Gratitude
Charitable organisations expressed gratitude towards the public for actively donating money, food, clothes and basic necessities during the holy month that there is a surplus of donations.
Speaking to May Al Bayat, Marketing Director for Dar Al Atta’a, she said that the donations are immediately given to the appropriate people in need in
the moment.
“We don’t hold on to the charities and we immediately distribute them. The public hands us the donations for a specific purpose whether is it sadaqah, zakat, iftar meals or otherwise,” said Al Bayat.
Surplus
“During Eid we do have a surplus of donations and we will keep them with us until the next Eid (Eid Al Adha). We will not and cannot use the donations for anything else other than the specific purpose it was given to us for,”
she added.
Saleh Al Qanobi, Vice President of the Charity and Alms Fund in Suwaiq said that they too received a surplus or donations and they distribute it in their hometown of Suwaiq.
“We distribute the donation we collect to the people in Suwaiq during the holy month. Whenever we have a surplus were distribute it continuously during the two months leading to Eid Al Adha,” said Al Qanobi. He further added, “During the Friday prayers we distribute leaflets to encourage people to donate.”
During the first week of Ramadan, the public donated over OMR43,000 which went for Sadaqa, meals for Iftar, helping Syria campaign as well as Zakat and orphans’ care. Since the beginning of the year until July 12 a total of OMR375,832.05 were donated by 12,222 donors so far.
Oman Charitable Organisation leads the list of charities with OMR114,750 made since the beginning of the year follow by Al Rahma Charity Team with OMR79471.95 made.
The Zakat which goes to the Ministry of Endowment and Religious Affairs made OMR56,219 for distribution and Dar Al Atta’a followed with OMR56,140.95.
