Himam Mountain Race returns for fifth edition in Oman

Muscat: The Himam Mountain Running Race is set to return for its fifth edition from 5 to 7 December 2024, taking place across four wilayats in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate. The event is organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, and the Al Dakhiliyah Governorate.

As one of the region’s most prominent sporting events, the race attracts over 1,000 participants from 65 countries, with more than 40% of runners coming from outside Oman. This international participation highlights the event’s growing global significance.

The competition features three main tracks of 110 kilometres, 55 kilometres, and 20 kilometres, designed to challenge athletes’ endurance and mental resilience amidst the rugged mountain terrain. The routes span the wilayats of Nizwa, Izki, Al Hamra, and Al Jabal Al Akhdar, offering participants breathtaking views of Oman’s mountains, valleys, and green farms.

In addition to the main races, supplementary events will be held on 6 and 7 December, catering to participants of all ages. These include shorter races ranging from one kilometre to ten kilometres, designed to engage school students and the wider community. An exhibition showcasing small and medium enterprises will also run alongside the event.

Beyond the athletic achievements, the Himam Mountain Running Race aims to promote sports tourism, enhance Oman’s international appeal, and stimulate the local economy. The event is expected to boost tourism by drawing visitors and athletes from around the globe, showcasing the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. It will also provide temporary job opportunities and invigorate commercial activities in the host wilayats.
