Riyadh: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Environment Authority, is taking part in the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The meeting, being held in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, from 2 to 13 December, takes the theme “Our Land.” “Our Future”.
Oman's delegation to the conference is headed by Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority.
In his speech, Al Amri stressed the effective role of the Sultanate of Oman in combating the phenomenon of desertification due to its negative impacts on natural pastures and areas of arable land. Towards this end, Oman is implementing clear-cut environmental policies, based on Oman Vision 2040, he added. Oman also signed and adhered to environmental agreements and treaties of relevance, he said.
As many as 197 parties, including 196 countries and the European Union, are taking part in the conference at a time when the world is witnessing an unprecedented rate of desertification, land degradation and drought.
The activities of the conference include the launch of initiatives and elaboration on ways to fund them and utilize them, in addition to discussions on specific projects undertaken by countries to combat desertification and land degradation. The conferees will also review the implementation plan of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16).
