Muscat: The Committee for Education, Scientific Research and Innovation of the Shura Council hosted specialists from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion on Tuesday to discuss measures for maximising the economic impact of intellectual property and its role in economic diversification.
During the meeting, the specialists delivered a visual presentation outlining various approaches to enhance the economic value of intellectual property.
The presentation addressed multiple facets such as trademark rights, copyright in scientific research, and other elements related to patents—including student innovations—which are expected to generate financial revenues for project owners, create job opportunities, and boost government income.
The visual presentation also highlighted the challenges and opportunities based on geographic indicators, spanning the social, economic, and tourism sectors, while emphasizing the preservation of national identity within the framework of intellectual property.
In addition, it underscored how such measures can protect investors and innovators in the Sultanate of Oman by helping them overcome challenges and seize opportunities for their creative ideas.
Furthermore, the specialists emphasised the role of intellectual property in stimulating intellectual and creative output by granting investors exclusive rights and protection for their innovations and creations.
They also stressed its importance in bolstering the knowledge economy, wherein information has emerged as a fundamental resource for a knowledge-based economic model.
The economic impact of intellectual property extends to optimising the use of information contained within databases and patents by making it accessible to beneficiaries.
This can be achieved through the organization of specialised workshops for inventors, leveraging Omani geographic indicators, and supporting and financing national inventions and innovative companies—whether pioneering or emerging.
Moreover, the presentation discussed the effects of international economic cooperation in the field of intellectual property, particularly in building external trust and enhancing the Sultanate of Oman’s reputation as a regional and international hub for intellectual property collaboration.
During the meeting, the esteemed committee members offered several proposals and recommendations, including supporting inventors by financing their inventions, and enhancing integrated efforts with various government entities and institutions to enforce intellectual property rights, raise awareness, and promote a national culture of intellectual property.
The meeting was held as part of the fifth meeting of the second regular session (2024–2025) of the tenth term (2023–2027), under the chairmanship of Jamal Ahmed Al-Abri, Chairman of the Committee, and attended by the esteemed committee members.
