Monday column: Get yourself to the Brain Gym today

Most of our demotivation come from a brain drain and we go into a depression mode that has no windows of escape.

Personally speaking, if I have to choose between the gym and lift weights to build my muscles, I always choose to exercise my brain. I am always convinced that the physical strength has no parallels when it comes to the power of the mind.

I have no quarrel with people who likes the gym. I understand that they get the ‘feel good’ vibes when they lift the weights or swing their bodies.  So how do you get to the Brain Gym? As a matter of fact, you don’t need to drive anywhere. It is a mental destination and not a physical one.

You also don’t need a quiet place, either. You can be anywhere and start the ‘workouts.’ You can switch off the noise by creating a peaceful zone in your head. I am not saying you can do that by thinking nothing at all. I am also not saying that you should meditate. It is about productive thinking and getting rid of obsessive feelings.

The ‘quiet time’ in your brain should be about how you would make yourself better and the people around you, especially your family. Taking a mental grasp of all the channels of your thoughts and connect yourself with the real world.

You could be walking, sit in a coffee shop, or take a swim and still exercise the brain by making it work for you. But make sure to go to a place that no one knows you to distract the streams of your thoughts. Also make sure that you have silenced your mobile, phone, too.

For me, it does not take more than an hour in a day. But when I finish, I feel refreshed and invigorated. But what is another advantage of the Brain Gym? You certainly keep ‘bad thoughts’ away by building a mental fortress preventing stress from attacking you. You will also keep the devastation of dementia at bay.

I am convinced and I don’t need a medical expert to tell me, that dementia is caused by people who do not exercise their brains in a positive way. I am not saying that physical exercises are a waste of time. They keep you fit and agile while at the same time trim down the cholesterol level. But it is the brain that stores all our conflicts and the body always responds negatively.

For most of us, we fight our emotional wars in the mind, unseen by the external world. That is, until, the pressure hits the roof and we react irrationally for everyone around us to see. We cannot make smart choices when the mind is not thinking straight. Almost all of us know someone who is physically incapacitated and bound on a wheelchair but have no physical health issues with their internal organs.

It is the power of the mind that keeps them going. We also know that if the mind is not treating the body well then we cannot perform. I am also convinced that most of our activities are not physical but confined in our minds.

Last but not least, the body follows the mind and not the other way around.
