We built the bridges for future prosperity but the young generation now think that we know nothing and everything we see now is new and beyond our grasp.
How wrong they are.
We sent letters by posting them in a hole on the wall and we got in touch over a great distance by rotating a number dial. But we are still here and well adapted with messages of the mobile phones and calling people as we walk on the beach. We are also the bridge when we had to read news on paper and now we do the same online.
We are lucky that we have seen the best of both worlds because we were on the beginning of the generation bridge and now live right on the middle of it. For them, it is a one dimensional because they have not seen the beginning.
Looking back, we see many gaps that are missing now as we progress forward very fast. We knew where to go when we wanted to hear the sound of silence. We could also take a step back when the rush hour became too hectic for us. There was always a place we could run to when we wanted to be away from the intrusive world where no phone would ring or messages flashing.
But having said all that, they have no connection of what we had in our younger days. They do not have the pleasure of hearing the sound of the milk bottles being delivered to our doors. As children, we saw street life in a very different way they see now.
No cars speeding past like the drivers trying to run away from the devil. We splashed the rainwater with our feet, sprinted on the cobbled stones and climbed the tallest trees.
The present generation do none of that because the streets are controlled by maniac drivers, cobbled stones have been replaced by tarmac roads and trees chopped down to make way for high rise buildings or shopping malls.
We helped older people climbed steps, did shopping without pushing trolleys and went to school walking through the narrow alleys. We can also say that we navigated ourselves using the paper maps and now we are also comfortable driving using GPS locations on our mobile phones.
We did not need emojis then to express ourselves but preferred to meet physically and use the expressions on our faces to convey our true feelings. We do all that now because we are following the new trends of electronic communications as we bridge the gap between the two generations.
Because we have seen the best of both worlds, we can judge what was before and what is now. We never try to judge but prefer to continue to cross the generation bridge and not really bothered where it will all end up.
We are also better judges between the generations because we know where we come from while the current generation are only in touch with trends that has unpredictable future. But we are always here to teach them to slow down when the world around them starts to heat up.
They should know that they can navigate away from the “fast lanes” of life by taking a slower route that has less expectations.
