Do you know how much cash you can carry while entering, exiting Oman?

Muscat : The Oman Customs has issued a new guideline for disclosing the need for persons carrying cash or bearing negotiable instruments across the Sultanate of Oman borders, to prevent money laundering and terror funding.

As per the notification, it is mandatory to declare cash amounts equal to or exceeding OMR6,000 (or its equivalent in other currencies) when entering, exiting, or transiting through the Sultanate.

The requirement is in line with Article (53) of the Law on Combating Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing, issued under Royal Decree No. 30/2016, and Decision No. 1/2017 of the National Committee for Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing.

According to the Oman Customs, travellers must provide valid identification and submit a cash declaration to the Customs Authority at checkpoints. Declarations may be made voluntarily through the electronic cash declaration system prior to arrival, or automatically upon inspection by customs officers.

Failure to declare or providing false information is a criminal offence under Article (98) of the Anti-Money Laundering Law.

Penalties include imprisonment for up to three years and/or a fine of up to OMR10,000. For legal entities, fines may range from OMR10,000 to the total value of the undeclared funds.

It also provides specific documentation requirements for incoming, outgoing, and transit cash transfers, including identification, proof of source, commercial registration (for companies), and certified power of attorney where applicable.

Oman Customs emphasised that the measure aims to enhance financial transparency, ensure compliance with international regulations, and mitigate the risks of illicit financial activity, while facilitating legitimate movement of funds across borders.
