Oman condemns use of chemical materials and riot-control agents in military operations

The Sultanate of Oman joined a group of 23 countries in a joint statement calling for an end to violations involving the use of chemical materials in conflict zones, and for full adherence to international law and the Chemical Weapons Convention, during the thirtieth session of the Conference of the States Parties held in The Hague.

In the statement delivered by Sheikh Abdullah Alharthy, Oman’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands and its Permanent Representative to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the participating delegations condemned the use of chemical materials and riot-control agents in military operations carried out by Israeli occupation forces against civilians in Palestine and Lebanon.

He said these practices constitute a clear breach of international law and the Chemical Weapons Convention, adding that Israel must comply with the resolutions of the UN Security Council and the ruling of the International Court of Justice.

On the situation in Palestine and Syria, the statement underlined the need for the Technical Secretariat to continue monitoring developments on the ground and to investigate related violations. It also welcomed the positive progress in the Syrian chemical file and the ongoing cooperation between the Syrian Arab Republic and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
