Oman participates in Multilateral Environmental Agreements session in Nairobi

Nairobi: The Sultanate of Oman participated on Wednesday in the opening session of the Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.

The MEA Day is a high-level international platform within the agenda of the Seventh Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7). It aims to enhance coordination and integration among global environmental agreements. This day features the organisation of dialogue sessions, coordination meetings, and specialized workshops that review implementation mechanisms, common challenges, and best practices in the fields of implementing agreements on Biodiversity, Climate Change, Combating Desertification, and Chemicals and Waste Management.

Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority and President of the Seventh Session of UNEA, and representative of the Sultanate of Oman's delegation, clarified in his opening speech that this day constitutes an important platform for deepening international dialogue, exchanging experiences, and reviewing successes and challenges facing global environmental action. He pointed out that the primary goal is to explore innovative and sustainable solutions for a safer and more resilient planet.

He affirmed that the Sultanate of Oman has made the environment an inherent pillar of its national identity, drawing inspiration from its natural diversity a vision based on coexistence between humans and their environment. This approach continues to be reinforced through its effective contributions to multilateral environmental action and building bridges of cooperation among nations.

He noted that the international community stands today at a crucial juncture within the framework of the Decade of Action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, with less than five years remaining until the target date. He stressed that the responsibility for transforming international commitments into practical and tangible steps lies not only with governments but also with the secretariats of the environmental agreements, international organizations, civil society, and the private sector.

In his speech, he touched upon Item 10 of the Session's agenda, related to cooperation with environmental agreements. He considered it an important opportunity for dialogue and exchange of views between representatives of world governments and different community components, contributing to strengthening partnerships and exploring ways to maximize the potential of these agreements at regional and national levels.

In concluding his speech, Dr. Abdullah Al Amri called on participants to actively engage in discussions and dialogues, exchange experiences and visions transparently, and work jointly to translate environmental ambitions into tangible impacts on the ground. He looked forward to the day's deliberations contributing to fostering a more sustainable and resilient environmental future for present and coming generations.
