Muscat: Heavy rains and flash floods sweeping parts of Oman have claimed six lives, as authorities continue rescue operations and urged citizens and residents to remain cautious amid unstable weather conditions.
More than 30 people were rescued while the fatalities included a child in Barka and Al Maawil in South Al Batinah governorate.
In a tragic incident in Barka on Monday, a seven-year-old child was drowned in a water pool. The child was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Severe weather, triggered by a low-pressure system, brought thunderstorms, strong winds, and widespread rainfall and destruction across several governorates, including Muscat.
Emergency teams have carried out multiple rescue operations, saving dozens of people stranded in flooded areas.
The National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre have reiterated warnings against crossing flooded wadis and low-lying roads, stressing that most fatalities occur when drivers underestimate fast-moving water.
Remote work advisory
Due to the prevailing unstable weather conditions and flash floods, the Ministry of Labour has urged government entities and private sector establishments to switch to remote work on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, wherever possible.
The advisory applies to civil service units and private sector companies equipped to operate remotely. The move aims to ensure public safety as heavy rains continue to affect several governorates, with the exception of Al Wusta and Dhofar.
Distance learning measures
The Ministry of Education announced a shift to distance learning for all public and private schools, universities, and colleges, effective from March 24 until March 26, 2026. This applies to all governorates except Dhofar and Al Wusta. The precautionary step comes in response to the low-pressure weather system affecting the country.
Relief and shelter centres
The Relief and Shelter Sector of the National Emergency Management Committee reported that 161 relief centers have been designated across the Sultanate, including 53 fully equipped to receive emergency cases. One centre at Al-Ghaythrana Basic Education School in Adam, Al-Dakhiliyah, has been activated, housing 13 families totaling 106 individuals.
Unstable conditions may persist
Weather forecasts indicate that unstable conditions may continue for the next few days. Residents are advised to stay updated through official channels, avoid crossing wadis, and refrain from driving through low-lying areas.
