Heavy thunderstorms expected across Oman from tonight

Muscat— The National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Center has confirmed that the Sultanate of Oman will continue to be affected by unstable weather conditions, with heavy thunderstorms expected to begin after midnight tonight and persist through Friday.

According to the center, the weather system will initially impact the governorates of Musandam Governorate, Al Buraimi Governorate, North Al Batinah Governorate, Al Dhahirah Governorate and Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, before gradually extending to include Muscat Governorate, South Al Batinah Governorate, North Al Sharqiyah Governorate, South Al Sharqiyah Governorate and Al Wusta Governorate.

The center warned that rainfall will vary in intensity and may become very heavy at times, accompanied by hailstorms. These conditions are likely to cause flash floods in wadis and low-lying areas, with some valleys expected to experience torrential flows. Additionally, strong downdrafts with wind speeds ranging between 20 and 50 knots are anticipated.

The effects of the weather system are also expected to reach parts of Dhofar Governorate, where scattered rainfall, occasionally thundery, may occur.

The National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Center, under the Civil Aviation Authority, urged citizens and residents to exercise caution during thunderstorms, avoid crossing flooded valleys, stay clear of low-lying areas, and refrain from going to sea during the warning period.
