InterContinental Muscat Advances Sustainability Efforts with New Environmental Initiatives

Muscat: In the heart of Muscat, InterContinental Muscat is taking tangible steps to advance sustainable hospitality, announcing the implementation of a series of practical environmental initiatives designed to reduce energy consumption and improve operational efficiency across the property.

Established as one of the first luxury hotels in the Sultanate, InterContinental Muscat has played a key role in shaping Oman’s hospitality landscape for decades. As the hotel approaches a significant milestone—its 50th anniversary in 2027—it continues to evolve while preserving its legacy as one of Muscat’s most iconic destinations.

As part of these efforts, the hotel has successfully completed the installation of solar-powered street lights (100%), along with 150 energy-efficient bollard lights, also fully completed, reducing reliance on traditional energy sources while enhancing the outdoor guest experience.

Further enhancements include the full completion of four heat and cool units, improving temperature control efficiency across key facilities. In parallel, two on-site water bottling units have been fully implemented, significantly reducing single-use plastic consumption and supporting more responsible daily operations.

On the infrastructure side, progress continues across key projects. The installation of three cooling towers is currently at 10% completion, while the upgrade of guest room windows to triple glazing has reached 50%, enhancing insulation and contributing to reduced energy demand throughout the hotel.

These actions are aligned with the broader environmental commitments of IHG Hotels & Resorts under its “Journey to Tomorrow” framework—its long-term direction toward 2030—focused on reducing environmental impact, improving resource efficiency, and supporting the communities in which it operates, guided by its purpose of “True Hospitality for Good.”

“At InterContinental Muscat, sustainability is a practical commitment reflected in how we operate every day,” said Sebastian Thomas, General Manager. “As we move closer to celebrating 50 years in 2027, these initiatives demonstrate our commitment to both preserving our legacy and building a more sustainable future.”

Viji Kunjachan, CHFE®, Area Director of Engineering, IHG Oman, added: “Our focus has been on implementing solutions that are both efficient and sustainable. These upgrades are not only improving performance today but also supporting our long-term environmental goals.”

With these developments, InterContinental Muscat continues to contribute to a more sustainable hospitality landscape in Oman, while reinforcing its role as a responsible and forward-looking destination in the capital.
