Oman to mark International Workers’ Day on Sunday

Muscat: The General Federation of Workers of the Sultanate of Oman will organise a celebration on Sunday, on the occasion of International Workers’ Day, observed annually on May 1, in recognition of the vital contribution of private sector workers to economic growth and national development.

The ceremony is held under the patronage of Dr. Hilal Ali Al Sabti, Minister of Health, and will be attended by several officials, representatives of private sector establishments, civil society institutions, and stakeholders in labour affairs.

The event aims to highlight the importance of the trade union movement in Oman and its role in improving working conditions across private sector establishments. It will also include the honoring of recipients of the Trade Union Work Award for 2025.

As part of the celebrations, the Federation will launch a media campaign focusing on strengthening the social protection system, safeguarding workers from abrupt termination of employment contracts, and highlighting job security issues during periods of job loss.

The event will also review key achievements, issues, and indicators outlined in the Federation’s annual report for 2025. In addition, the artwork “Oman’s Arms” will be launched, which seeks to highlight the value of workers in society and promote a positive image of professionalism, dedication, ambition, and loyalty, while strengthening a sense of belonging in the workplace.

The Federation will also sign a cooperation agreement with Petroleum Development Oman and a memorandum of cooperation with the Oman Energy Association (OPAL), reflecting ongoing collaboration between trade unions and private sector institutions. The agreements aim to enhance constructive dialogue, support labour market stability, and improve the work environment in line with shared responsibilities.

The Trade Union Work Award, adopted by the Federation, honors unions, government entities, private sector establishments, and civil society institutions that contribute to developing trade union work and supporting labour market balance and social stability.

The Federation noted that the number of trade unions in Oman reached around 340 by the end of December 2025, reflecting continued growth in organized labour representation and engagement.
