Muscat: The Environment Authority organised a special event to mark World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5, under this year’s theme: “Inspired by Nature… For the Climate… For Our Future.” The event brought together environmental specialists, youth advocates, and stakeholders with the aim of raising environmental awareness and highlighting initiatives and practices that support sustainability and environmental protection.
The program featured a presentation on the Environment Authority’s efforts to address climate change, outlining progress in environmental policies, the preparation of national reports, and initiatives aimed at climate change mitigation and adaptation. The presentation also highlighted efforts to protect the ozone layer, the launch of the Manakh (Climate) Platform, and the strengthening of international cooperation in supporting clean energy policies and reducing pollution.
The event also included a presentation titled “Journey of Impact” by the Basmatuna Ghair Team, which showcased its journey and initiatives in supporting environmental and community causes. The presentation emphasized the importance of fostering sustainable behavioral awareness among young people and society, empowering women, and promoting eco-tourism camps.
Another session focused on the efforts of the Arab Youth Climate Movement in addressing climate change, highlighting the role of young people in leading climate initiatives and strengthening community participation in environmental action.
Participants were also introduced to the Nature Lab, presented as an innovative model for strengthening people’s connection with nature, enhancing environmental awareness, showcasing local talents and success stories, and encouraging community engagement through dialogue and knowledge exchange.
In addition, the Environment Society of Oman delivered a presentation entitled “Empowering the Next Generation,”which focused on the importance of building the capacities of children and youth and involving them in future environmental and climate efforts through educational initiatives. The presentation also reviewed a number of ongoing awareness and conservation programs.
The event featured several visual presentations highlighting key environmental initiatives and achievements, underscoring the importance of collective efforts by communities and institutions to achieve sustainable development goals and enhance environmental awareness across society.
A key highlight of the event was the launch of the “Environmental Atlas of the Sultanate of Oman,” a scientific and educational reference documenting Oman’s most significant environmental and natural assets. The atlas provides an overview of the country’s biodiversity, natural resources, and environmental characteristics across its governorates, supported by maps, data, and up-to-date environmental indicators.
The atlas aims to enhance environmental knowledge and support researchers, policymakers, and environmental stakeholders, contributing to the promotion of sustainability principles and the conservation of natural resources for future generations.
Over recent years, Oman has achieved significant progress in environmental protection and biodiversity conservation through the expansion of protected areas management, the implementation of national afforestation and cultivation initiatives, ecosystem restoration projects, circular economy programs, and a range of efforts aimed at achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
