India’s thermal coal imports fall to four-year low as domestic production and renewables expand

India's thermal coal imports fell to a four-year low during the first five months of 2026, reflecting the country's growing reliance on domestic coal production and renewable energy sources.

According to industry data, thermal coal imports totaled 65 million tonnes between January and May, down 12 percent compared with the same period last year. The decline supports India's broader goal of reducing dependence on imported coal by 30 percent this year.

The drop in imports has been driven largely by increased domestic coal output. State-owned Coal India has stepped up production to meet rising electricity demand, particularly during periods of extreme heat when power consumption surges. Higher local production has enabled power generators to reduce purchases from international markets, lowering exposure to volatile global coal prices and shipping costs.

At the same time, renewable energy is playing an increasingly important role in the country's power supply. Renewable generation rose by 22 percent during the January-May period, significantly outpacing the 5 percent increase in overall power generation. India's peak electricity demand exceeded 270 gigawatts on May 21, with renewable sources contributing a growing share of the supply.

Despite the positive trend, challenges remain. Domestic coal generally contains higher ash content than imported varieties, potentially increasing maintenance and operating costs for power plants. In addition, the efficiency of domestic coal supply depends heavily on transportation networks, particularly railway capacity. Any disruptions in logistics could affect fuel availability at power stations.

Analysts say investors should monitor Coal India's production performance, coal stock levels at power plants, renewable energy growth, and the reliability of transportation infrastructure. These factors will help determine whether India can sustain lower import levels while meeting rising electricity demand.

The continued expansion of domestic coal production and renewable energy capacity highlights India's efforts to strengthen energy security and reduce vulnerability to fluctuations in international fuel markets.
