HANOI: Vietnam’s National Assembly (NA) Chairman Tran Thanh Man has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with India across a wide range of sectors during a meeting with newly appointed Indian Ambassador to Vietnam Tshering Wangchuk Sherpa in Hanoi.
During the meeting on June 23, Chairman Man praised the ambassador’s efforts in advancing Vietnam–India relations, particularly his role in coordinating the recent state visit to India by To Lam. He noted that the visit and the elevation of bilateral ties to an enhanced comprehensive strategic partnership had opened a new chapter in relations between the two countries.
The Vietnamese leader said the National Assembly would work closely with India’s Parliament to implement agreements and understandings reached by senior leaders of both nations. He called for stronger cooperation in trade, investment, science and technology, defence, security, education, healthcare, culture and people-to-people exchanges.
Chairman Man also highlighted the importance of parliamentary diplomacy, welcoming the establishment of the India–Vietnam Parliamentary Friendship Group by India’s Parliament and noting the creation of the Vietnam–India Parliamentary Friendship Group by Vietnam’s National Assembly. He proposed increasing exchanges between lawmakers, specialised committees and friendship groups while sharing legislative experience on major national issues.
The chairman expressed confidence that both countries could achieve their goal of raising bilateral trade to US$25 billion and expanding collaboration in innovation, digital transformation and emerging technologies.
For his part, Ambassador Sherpa said India’s leaders, academics, media and public had highly valued the outcomes of To Lam’s visit, describing it as a significant milestone that had generated fresh momentum for bilateral ties. He stressed that the Indian government attaches great importance to implementing the agreements reached during the visit and would continue working closely with Vietnamese authorities.
The ambassador also pledged to promote cultural and religious exchanges and strengthen people-to-people contacts to enhance mutual understanding. He revealed that India is studying plans to bring Buddhist relics to Vietnam again for public veneration in the future.
As a sign of growing parliamentary cooperation, Ambassador Sherpa conveyed greetings from C. P. Radhakrishnan and Om Birla and delivered an invitation from Speaker Birla for Chairman Man to visit India. The Vietnamese leader accepted the invitation and said the visit would be arranged at a mutually convenient time.
The meeting underscored the strong commitment of both countries to deepen their strategic partnership and expand cooperation across political, economic, technological and cultural fields.
