Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman participated on Sunday in the extraordinary joint meeting of the Commercial Cooperation Committee and the Industrial Cooperation Committee of the GCC. Held via videoconferencing, the meeting aimed to follow up on the latest developments regarding joint strategic initiatives and projects in the commercial and industrial sectors.
The Sultanate of Oman was represented at the meeting by Eng. Ghalib Said Al Maamari, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion for Commerce and Industry.
The meeting reviewed a visual presentation delivered by the GCC Secretariat General, which addressed the executive steps for developing an integrated Gulf system aimed at enhancing food, pharmaceutical, water, and logistical security. This initiative falls within the framework of supporting the Gulf's readiness to confront regional and international challenges.
Furthermore, the presentation highlighted the main pillars of this joint Gulf orientation, foremost among them being the current geopolitical tensions and global supply chain disruptions. It emphasised that the project aims to enhance market stability, mitigate the risks of essential goods shortages, and achieve economic savings through joint purchasing and storage mechanisms, drawing on successful international and regional experiences in this domain.
The two ministerial committees were briefed on the proactive measures taken by the Secretariat General. These measures included the formation of a supreme committee chaired by the Secretary-General, and a specialised technical team to oversee the preparation of studies. Additionally, they involved coordinating with the ministries of commerce and industry in the member states to appoint liaison officers, as well as collecting national perspectives and studies, which have been received from all member states to support the project's operations.
The meeting concluded by endorsing the efforts exerted by the Secretariat General in preparing the Gulf integration study. Directives were issued to hold a workshop for senior officials and specialists from the member states to review the study plan. The meeting also underscored the commitment of the member states to provide the Secretariat General with the necessary data, information, and documents to complete the project, in preparation for presenting its results at the upcoming meeting.
