Ministry of Heritage and Tourism commends citizen for meteorite discovery in Dhofar

Muscat: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism commended the initiative of citizen Saeed bin Humaid Al-Harizi, who contacted the Ministry after suspecting the discovery of a rock sample, possibly a meteorite, in the Ramlat Jadila area of ​​the Mitan district in Dhofar Governorate. 

This initiative reflects community awareness of the importance of preserving the geological heritage of the Sultanate of Oman.

His Excellency Engineer Ibrahim bin Saeed Al-Kharousi, Undersecretary of the Ministry for Heritage, honoured the citizen in recognition of his initiative and his commitment to contacting the relevant authorities.

 The Ministry initiated the necessary technical procedures to document the sample and subject it to laboratory testing. The test results confirmed that it is a stony meteorite sample weighing approximately 12 kilograms.

This initiative underscores the importance of community partnership in preserving the natural and geological heritage of the Sultanate of Oman and enhancing the role of community members in identifying discoveries of scientific and historical value, thus enabling the relevant authorities to document and study them according to established scientific procedures.

 The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism affirms that the Citizen Initiative represents a positive model of cooperation between the community and the competent authorities, and contributes to raising awareness of the importance of geological discoveries, preserving them, and making them available for use in scientific and educational fields, thus enhancing knowledge of the geological and natural wealth that the Sultanate of Oman abounds in.
