SALALAH: The International United Nations Symposium on Water Resources Sustainability, themed “Water and Climate Change,” will begin on Sunday in Salalah, bringing together specialists and experts from Oman and abroad for two days of discussions.
The symposium is organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in partnership with Dhofar Municipality and Nama Dhofar Services, and in cooperation with the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, UNESCO and the Omani Water Society.
The event will highlight Oman's experience in managing and sustaining water resources, with discussions focusing on the impact of climate change on surface and groundwater resources.
Key topics will include:
Managing risks associated with floods, drought and salinity
Expanding water sources through seawater desalination and treated-water reuse
Improving water-use efficiency in agriculture
Protecting groundwater reserves
Preserving, maintaining and rehabilitating aflaj, Oman's traditional irrigation systems
Using artificial intelligence, remote sensing, geographic information systems and hydrological modelling in water management
The symposium is expected to provide a platform for sharing expertise and exploring innovative approaches to strengthening water security and climate resilience in Oman and beyond.
