Duqm: A seminar titled "Developing Artisanal Fishing Ships: Towards a More Efficient and Sustainable Fleet" was held on Wednesday in Duqm. The event aimed to introduce the programme, review regulatory and financing procedures for transitioning from individual to institutional ownership, and discuss the state of the fisheries sector.
The seminar was organised by the Directorate General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in Al Wusta Governorate. It reflects the economic and social significance of fisheries to Al Wusta, which is home to approximately 4,724 fishermen and 100 artisanal fishing ships.
Working papers reviewed the sector's status in Al Wusta, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah governorates, services provided to fishermen and ship owners, and the challenges and opportunities available for development.
The seminar discussed the importance of investment in fisheries industries, raising the added value of marine products, and improving working conditions on board vessels in support of food security.
The Artisanal Fishing Ships Programme aims to preserve and develop the existing fleet in line with standards, improve equipment, security, and safety facilities, and permit expatriate labour when needed, while creating job opportunities for Omanis.
