Key points of Minister’s lecture on Gulf security

Muscat: Oman's Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi has outlined key messages on inclusive security in the Gulf, calling for renewed regional dialogue, stronger cooperation among Gulf states and diplomatic efforts to achieve lasting peace.

Speaking at Girton College, University of Cambridge, in the United Kingdom, Al Busaidi highlighted the following priorities:

1. Begin a new regional dialogue

All eight states in the Gulf region should work together to resolve differences, build trust and strengthen regional stability.

2. Renew the vision of Muscat 1976

The eight states that met in Muscat in 1976 should reconvene to pursue a collective approach to Gulf security.

3. Secure navigation through the Strait of Hormuz

Regional countries should develop a shared understanding of arrangements to ensure safe and secure maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

4. Keep diplomacy open

The basic components of a potential agreement between Iran and the United States remain in place, providing an opportunity to continue diplomatic engagement.

5. Reshape external partnerships

Regional states should take the lead in addressing security challenges, while external partnerships should increasingly support economic cooperation and investment.

6. Take the first steps now

Difficult negotiations and mutual suspicion should not delay progress towards lasting regional peace.
