Oman travel: Enchanting Al Hoota Caves

Oman, in the eyes of any tourist, is all about the golden sands, the pristine beaches, and the majestic forts and castles. But that’s not all. There are plenty of other hidden treasures of this land and one such is prized possession lies ensconced in a mountain near Al Hamra at the foothills of Al Hajar Mountains. Some 250km away from Muscat are the spectacular Al Hoota Caves amidst plateaus and rugged mountain peaks. Known for its natural formation of stalactites and stalagmites, Al Hoota Caves offer a fascinating insight into the cave that is more than 2 million years old. The cave that recently reopened after a long hiatus (it was initially opened in 2006 but was closed for renovation in 2012) is one of the top most attractions of the country. Interspersed with several remarkable natural formations along with intriguing chambers, this cave was formed by the dissolution of limestone and the 4.5km long stretch is a sight to behold.
Drive from Muscat to Nizwa to reach Al Hoota; it takes approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to reach there. It’s a pleasant drive and is also properly sign-posted hence you would not lose your way. For the tour you can do the bookings once you reach there but it is always better to do the reservation in advance to avoid disappointment. Owing to its delicate ecosystem, a maximum of only 750 people are allowed to visit the caves on a day and so it is ideal to do prior booking.
The tour starts from the Visitor’s Centre with a short ride in electric train that carries up to 48 passengers up to the cave entrance. From there you need to walk inside.
Once inside the cave, it’s a feast for the eyes as you walk on the pathway and witness some stunning stalactites and stalagmites formation. Don’t miss the popular lion’s head, the cat, the old man and countless other intriguing shapes. Watch some rare fish in the central lake and get a close look at the bats hovering above. These tours are guided and are available both in English and Arabic which is approximately for 45 minutes. Remember photography is not allowed inside the cave but don’t be disheartened as there is a photo service where you can take your picture with the cave backdrop. Also it is important to carry drinking water along keeping in mind the humidity inside. The walkway and the steps are wet and slippery so ensure that you wear comfortable footwear. And once you finish your tour do not forget to visit the geological exhibition that offers an interesting insight into the geology of Oman and an in-depth study on how these caves were formed. For those looking for a bit more leisure walk into the gift shop for those little mementoes or visit the nearby restaurant. Serving mainly Arabian cuisine, Midyaf Restaurant is worth a visit as they serve food made out of the local produce of Al Hamra. Visit the amazing natural sculptures, it’s certainly a different kind of experience. —[email protected]
