Muscat: An Indian mother is pleading for the speedy return of her son, who has been lying in coma for three months in an Omani hospital.
Sunilkumar Mullathu was found unconscious by police three months ago on a Ruwi street. He had suffered a fractured skull, either after a fall or an attack.
Royal Oman Police are still investigating the incident.
Since then, Sunilkumar has undergone 12 surgeries, and doctors are constantly battling to fight infections in the Indian expat’s healing skull. His medical bills are over OMR8,000, relatives have confirmed.
Take care
“Please send my son back home. I will get him treated here,” Shobha MS, the mother of Sunilkumar, told Times of Oman from the south Indian state of Kerala. “I am alone here. I am in my 60s and diabetic, too. But that doesn’t matter. I will take care of him. I approached the local government legislative assembly member and others to bring my son back.
“They are all just giving assurances. I am tired. I am afraid that something wrong will happen to my son,” Shoba added.
Sunilkumar, who has been working as a technician with a security equipment installation company for the last eight years in Muscat, was found unconscious on September 15.
Khoula Hospital
He was taken to Khoula Hospital by Royal Oman Police. Medical reports shared by Sunilkumar’s relatives reveal that he had suffered a severe injury to his skull and was treated by neurologists at the emergency unit of the hospital. A relative of Sunilkumar in Oman said he does not know why Sunilkumar has not been repatriated to India.
“He was in good enough health to be flown back last month. We had received a no-objection certificate from the Indian embassy and Royal Oman Police, too. However, due to some unknown reasons, he is stuck here. What we understand is that bills are high and there is uncertainty about who will pay them, which is the problem,” the relative added.
Medical care
According to the relative, the bill for the medical care is some OMR8,000. “A hospital in India has offered treatment for Sunilkumar. We hope that soon he will be repatriated,” the relative added. To fly Sunilkumar home to Kerala, a special ventilator unit is required, and he must be accompanied by a medic and nurse. “We checked with travel agents, they said it may cost around OMR2,600,” the relative added.
Meanwhile, an official from Sunilkumar’s company said they are working to repatriate Sunilkumar, as soon as possible.
