OmanPride: Lamees Al Kaabi, a media personality with a big heart

Meeting Lamees Al Kaabi, a certified journalist, TV presenter, and media personality, who has always endeavoured to spread the message of love and peace through her work, was a great opportunity to interact with someone so dedicatedly working for a cause. Lamees is a beautiful spirit, residing in sunny Muscat and the minute we walked into her office for an interview, we sensed positive vibes owing to her beautiful presence that brings joy to one’s heart. Al Kaabi was born in Basra, Iraq, and graduated from the University of Basra with a degree in Translation and Language. She is the general manager of the Al Bayader weekly magazine in Salalah, and has her own annual TV show on A’sharqiya TV in Dubai called Al Khayrat.

Growing up, Al Kaabi was always passionate about media; at the same time she wanted to do good for humanity and leave her mark on the planet by championing human rights. To bring her dreams to reality, she took diploma courses in news reporting, media journalism, and TV presentations. After getting into the industry, she started making her way to the top, and a decade later, she has become a renowned name in the media industry. Her hard work has truly paid off.

As life in Iraq became a battle for survival, Al Kaabi decided to migrate to another country in search for a better life; she landed in Oman and continued her journey of becoming a professional and successful household name in the field of TV and journalism. Some of the qualities that set her apart are that she writes all her TV material, which explains why she fell in love with writing and presenting. “One complements the other, it makes things smoother,” Al Kaabi explained.

Throughout her career, Al Kaabi has written numerous stories for a variety of publications in the Sultanate and around the region. In 2015, she embarked on a new journey in front of the camera, where she landed the Al Khayrat show which she developed, and which was aimed at exposing and sharing stories from Iraqi families and their journey post the war, including migration, widowed women, and people’s lives in Iraq in general. The show became a hit in the Gulf and Iraq, elevating her name to join the elite world of Gulf TV presenters.

Being an advocate for peace, most of her endeavours are filled with love, carrying a message that inspires optimism, which can be seen in her eagerness to contribute to the causes of Oman’s youth. For her, it is the one of the best rewards one could ever ask for. “My motto is to be a humanitarian before becoming a media personality,” Al Kaabi said, adding that, “we need to remember that we are human. Race, colour, and nationality come second”. The journalist has now started an initiative called “Be human,” in the hope to encourage peace and help eliminate racism and hatred in the region.

Al Kaabi has a huge social media following in the Gulf and Levant, and her fans express nothing short of adoration for the journalist. “The love that my fans and followers show me is indescribable. They support me, encourage me, and have been a big part of my journey in media,” she said. “I try my best to remain humble, simple and real, and that’s what gives me an edge with my fans,” she added.

Al Kaabi is currently developing a new show based on a humanitarian concept, and is set to travel to Iraqi camps as part of her new project. She truly enjoys making her Al Khayrat programme and hopes to get involved and create work that inspire peace, and contributes to changing the way she looks at things and sees the world from a different perspective. “I feel that I should leave an imprint on hearts, and that makes me feel respected, appreciated, and loved by those around me. It’s a beautiful feeling.”
