Muscat: A thousand native and endangered trees have been planted in Dhofar and 19,000 more will be planted under a campaign launched by the Environment Society of Oman (ESO) in the governorate in 2012.
“The campaign in Dhofar aims to plant 20,000 trees. Since 2012, we have planted 7,000 native trees. The planting was done in schools, colleges and universities, along with other entities in Dhofar,” said Hamed Al Ghailani, ESO’s community outreach manager. He added, “We focus on planting native trees, which are considered endangered species.”
The tree planting activities were conducted by ESO staff and volunteers from the society.
Involving the society
“By involving the society members in the tree planting activities, we are aiming to let them learn more about Oman’s environment and biodiversity, as it is one of ESO’s objectives to raise awareness in society about Oman’s biodiversity and conservation of endangered species” Al Ghailani said. Although ESO focused its campaign in Dhofar, they have also planted 300 trees in six schools in Muscat.
ESO is Oman’s leading non-governmental eco-conservation organisation, and was founded in March 2004 by Omanis representing different regions and many different professional backgrounds.
Membership is open to anyone above the age of 18, who has an interest in conserving the environment.
