Muscat: An online application meant to introduce tourists to the most beautiful tourist spots in the Sultanate won the first place in the Global Entrepreneurship (GEW 2017) the Startup Weekend programme.
A series of events in line with GEW 2017 concluded at the National Business Centre (NBC) in the Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM).
The events, which also come in line with the Sultanate’s celebrations of the 47th Glorious National Day, were organised by the National Business Centre (NBC), in cooperation with the Public Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Riyada).
The final event of GEW Oman 2017 was the Startup Weekend programme, which was held for a period of three days. Startup Weekend is a global programme that connects entrepreneurs, organiaing teams, and startup communities around the world.
The programme is a 54-hour weekend event that featured around 20 consultants and experts in entrepreneurship. The event aimed at promoting communication between the participants and exchange views. Each participant came up with an idea during the programme and the best idea from the groups was voted for. The programme concluded with the selection of three most viable and cost-effective ideas.
Guide to Go project won the first place. Its idea is to introduce tourists to the most beautiful tourist spots in the Sultanate through an online application that enjoys all the necessary details needed by the tourists. The application would also contain an audio feature that explains the locations in a convenient way.
Oman Camping project won the second place. The idea of the project is to organize tourist trips to Duqm through youth from Duqm.
These trips aim at taking the visitors in an unforgettable experience to enjoy the picturesque scenes in Duqm. Re-life project won the third place. The concept of this project is to recycle the environmental waste through manufacturing an interactive machine. This machine shall collect and sort the waste by itself and then the raw materials would be distributed to various companies that work in recycling each material.
The winners were rewarded with the opportunity to be incubated in the National Business Centre or Riyada incubator. Besides, they have been given the opportunity to have free access to pre-incubation stage, and take part in legal sessions offered by Law and Life Company.
Moreover, they will be attending sessions on marketing services offered by Mint Marketing Company, consultancy sessions on entrepreneurship organized by Startup Oman, and economic consultancy sessions organized by High Ambition Centre. In addition, Eshraqa Company took the initiative to support an idea of a participant which is related to electronic mind maps.
This programme was organized under the support of Eshraqa Company, Duqm Refinery, Ajyal Al Mustaqbal, Mint Marketing, Bel Studio, Kaizen Oman, Law and Life Magazine, Startup Oman, and High Ambition.
It should be noted that the purpose of Global Entrepreneurship Week is to connect experts and entrepreneurs to unleash their ideas and transform innovative ideas into reality. GEW takes place in more than 140 countries worldwide and the National Business Centre is privileged to host this initiative for the fifth consecutive year.
