Muscat: A newly-wed Omani couple was found dead in a flat in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi last week. Local police suspect a gas leak was the cause, a top diplomat told the Times of Oman.
Speaking to the Times of Oman over the phone from Ankara, the diplomat said the Omani embassy in Turkey got a call from the couple’s relatives that they had passed away in Tbilisi.
The couple had hired a tourist guide to explore the city. “The tour guide couldn’t reach them for three days. Another Omani family who had also hired him, advised him to report the incident to the police as soon as possible,” the official explained.
Police went to the apartment and broke open the door on Sunday to find the bodies. The couple had apparently died three days before that, the diplomat quoted the police as saying. “The initial investigation by the Georgian police showed they died because of a gas leak,” he said.
“The Omani embassy in Ankara coordinated with the Qatar embassy in Tbilisi to follow up,” the diplomat said. Two brothers of the victims who went to Georgia were helped by the Qatar Embassy officials. “We would like to thank the Qatar Embassy in Tbilisi for their cooperation in completing the repatriation measures,” the diplomat said.
The bodies arrived at 9pm Oman time on Monday via a flydubai flight, and were laid to rest at the Wadi Al Aa’la village graveyard in the wilayat of Babla a few hours later.
