Muscat: A 39.5 per cent decline in the number of road accidents registered in the Sultanate was recorded in the first five months of 2018, new statistics show.
The number of road accidents in the Sultanate until May 2018 was 1,014 incidents, compared with 1,676 road accidents during the same period in 2017.
According to statistics issued by the National Center for Statistics and Information, based on preliminary data from the Royal Oman Police, during the month of May, Governorate of Muscat logged the highest number of road accidents with a share of 30 per cent of the total accidents in the Sultanate, followed by the Governorate of North Al Batinah at 14.7 per cent, while the Governorates of Al Dakhiliah and Dhofar, each of them reporting 13.8 per cent of the total road accidents in Oman.
According to the statistics, the number of accidents during the day was 59 per cent, compared to 41per cent of accidents happening at night.
By the end of May, 248 deaths and 1,186 injuries had been caused by road accidents, while the same period in 2017 saw 249 deaths, and 2,359 injuries.
Data showed that 143 of the road traffic deaths in 2018 were Omani, of which 128 were males and 15 were females; 105 expatriate deaths were also recorded, 97 of whom were males and 8 were females.
