Ministry issues statement on rumours about poisonous jellyfish in Oman

Muscat: The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries dismissed rumours of poisonous purple jellyfish circulating on social media.

In a statement, the ministry said, "Currently on social media there are images of a purple jellyfish alongside claims it is very dangerous. Experts at the Centre of Marine Sciences at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries say that this form of jellyfish is called the crown jellyfish and is harmless to humans," adding that they feed on ocean particles, live for around six months, and that 95 per cent of its body consists of water.

However, the ministry warned, "Many jellyfish are harmless but their stings might cause skin to redden so do not swim near these creatures."
