Muscat: US President Donald Trump met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for dinner as they kicked off their summit in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Before the dinner, Trump tweeted, "Vietnam is thriving like few places on earth. North Korea would be the same, and very quickly, if it would denuclearize. The potential is AWESOME, a great opportunity, like almost none other in history, for my friend Kim Jong Un. We will know fairly soon - Very Interesting!"
Earlier in the day, Trump also met Vietnamese leaders including President Nguyen Phu Trong and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said about the meeting with Vietnamese, "Presidents Trump and Trong affirmed the need for continued progress toward the final, fully verified denuclearization of North Korea; a free and open Indo-Pacific; & a stronger US-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership."
The Hanoi summit is expected to build on the groundwork of what was achieved at the Singapore summit between Trump and Kim last June.
