Indian parliament’s lower houses passes Triple Talaq Bill

New Delhi: India’s lower house, the Lok Sabha, on Thursday passed the controversial Triple Talaq Bill with an overwhelming majority.

The bill criminalises instant divorce by Muslim men and seeks jail term for the guilty.

The bill will now go to the Rajya Sabha after 303 parliamentarians voted in favour of the bill while 82 voted against it in the Lok Sabha.

Several amendments that were brought by the Opposition were voted down by a majority.

The final draft of a three year jail term for men practicing triple talk was approved by 302 parliamentarians while 78 were against it.

Indian Law Minister Ravi Shankar said that this bill was pertinent for gender equality in India and that despite Indian Supreme Court striking down the practice of triple talaq as legally binding, women were being divorced by ’talaq-e-biddat’.

Under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Biill, 2019, divorcing through instant triple talaq will be illegal, void and would attract a jail term of three years for the husband.
