Muscat: Taking into account the complaints of subscribers and consumers over the increase in power tariff in a number of wilayats, the Services and Social Development Committee of Majlis Al Shura discussed the issue on Tuesday.
The Committee also discussed the proposals and alternatives for the hike in electricity bills as circulated on social media.
Reviewing similar situations in other countries, the Committee discussed the option of taking meter readings regularly from the beginning of the month to the end of the month. It also discussed the possibility of the electricity companies arranging regular reading of electricity metres or allowing self–reading by the consumers by the end of each month.
The discussion took place during the meeting of the Committee chaired by Dr. Hamoud bin Ahmed Al Yahyaei, Chairman of the Committee in the presence of the Committee members.
The members of the Committee stressed the necessity of hosting a number of experts at the Public Services Regulatory Authority and the companies operating in the electricity sector.
The meeting also discussed the reports on complaints of subscribers and consumers, approved tariff regulations, methods of calculation of the electricity consumption charges on the basis of estimated metre readings.
It also discussed, the actions to be taken to ensure accurate metre readings, submission of electricity bills and collection of amounts due among other issues.
