Muscat: The total number of gemstone samples that were tested in accordance with the gem categories standards in the Testing Laboratory of Valuable Stones Inspection at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) in 2020 reached 413 samples.
According to Nasser Al Balushi, Head of the Precious Stones Department and Testing Laboratory at the Directorate General of Standards and Metrology (DGSM) at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI), the number of tested samples in the first category reached 314 samples, which includes diamonds, sapphires, blue sapphires, emeralds, black opals, alexandrite and chrysopril, in addition to the industrial gemstones manufactured by modern methods, single stones and stones fixed on jewellery, which are more or less than 10 stones and uncut stones.
The number of gemstone samples of second category reached 85 samples, which includes the stones manufactured by ancient methods, single stones fixed on jewellery that are more or less than 10 stones, and the unpolished stones. The number of gemstone samples of the third category reached 14 samples, including plastic, glass, imitation and other shapes.
