Muscat: The National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, aims to provide information about the extent to which individuals and families (both Omani and expatriate) use information and communication technology in the Sultanate.
A survey is being conducted to measure access and use of information and communication technology, which will end next Thursday.
The survey aims to provide many important indicators about the extent to which individuals and families (Omani and expatriate) use information and communication technology in the Sultanate and the extent of their ownership of its most important tools.
The survey also indicates the percentage of families and individuals (aged 18 years and above) who have access to the internet and common causes as to why such families and individuals lack access to the internet.
The survey also explores key areas of internet use: Accessing electronic government services, buying or selling goods through websites, the use of electronic services for travel, hotel reservation and educational purposes, as well as the percentage of engaging with social networks (e.g. creating user profile, posting messages or other contributions to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.)
The segment consists of 2,500 Omanis and expatriates aged 18 years and above in all governorates of the Sultanate. The survey is conducted in three languages: Arabic, English and Urdu.
The survey provides data about the possession and use of smart phones and smart phone apps, in addition to the percentage of households using computer systems (desktop, laptop or tablet), the number of individuals using the systems and their respective skills and habitual practise: sending an email, using simple mathematical formulas in calculation programs (such as Excel), creating electronic presentations, writing computer programs, using specialised programming language and individuals' ownership and use of smart and ordinary phones.
The indicators of the survey will be of use to international institutions (like the International Telecommunication Union) and help them determine what has been achieved in all countries of the world regarding the use of information and communication technology. The countries will be listed according to their achievement in this important field.
