India’s Sensex gains 98 points in volatile trade

Mumbai: Key equity indices oscillated between gains and setbacks on Thursday but closed in the green with IT and PSU banks gaining some momentum.

The BSE S&P Sensex closed 98 points or 0.19 per cent higher at 51,115 while the Nifty 50 gained by 36 points or 0.24 per cent to 15,338. Sectoral indices at the National Stock Exchange were mixed with Nifty PSU bank moving up by 2.8 per cent and IT by 1.1 per cent. But Nifty realty, pharma and FMCG closed in the negative terrain.

Among stocks, State Bank of India advanced by 3.1 per cent to Rs 426.50 per share while Kotak Mahindra Bank was up by 2 per cent to Rs 1,776.85 per unit and Axis Bank by 1.9 per cent to Rs 749.60.

Bajaj Auto gained by 2.2 per cent, Tata Steel by 1.9 per cent, Tech Mahindra by 2 per cent and Wipro by 1.9 per cent. Power Grid Corporation closed 1.6 per cent higher at Rs 229.15 per share.

However, home loan lender HDFC lost by 2.6 per cent, Bajaj Finance by 1.4 per cent, Bharti Airtel by 1.1 per cent and Maruti Suzuki by 0.9 per cent.

Meanwhile, Asian shares retreated from two-week highs. MSCI's broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan was down 0.5 per cent.
Japan's Nikkei was down 0.33 per cent on profit booking while South Korea's Kospi fell by 0.09 per cent as tech heavyweights slumped.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index slipped by 1.18 per cent.
