India conducted a major missile test off the Odisha coast

New Dekhi: India has likely entered a new phase after conducting the maiden test of a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile off the Odisha coast on May 8. The launch, overseen by DRDO, took place from Abdul Kalam Island near Chandipur under tight security and restricted airspace conditions across the Bay of Bengal.

According to defence reports, the missile is widely believed to be linked to the long-discussed Agni-6 programme - a next-generation ICBM expected to strike targets beyond 10,000 kilometers. Officials reportedly created a 3,560-km danger corridor over the Bay of Bengal ahead of the launch, signalling the scale and seriousness of the operation.

The missile is expected to feature MIRV technology - Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicles - allowing one missile to carry several nuclear warheads capable of hitting separate targets simultaneously. India had already demonstrated MIRV capability during the Agni-5 “Mission Divyastra” test in 2024, but this latest development marks a much bigger leap in long-range deterrence capability. 🔥

For years, Agni-6 existed mostly in defence discussions, leaked reports, and strategic speculation. Now, after this reported successful trial, India appears closer than ever to joining the small group of nations possessing true intercontinental nuclear strike capability.

The Bay of Bengal stayed silent for a few minutes. But strategically, the message travelled across continents.
