Muscat: What can young engineers do to provide a better life to people? This question will be answered next Sunday during the 7th Engineering Students Gathering at the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), at an event held under the patronage Salim Bin Nassir Al Oufi, undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil and Gas, and Dr. Ali Al Bemani ,vice chancellor of the SQU.
Proudly showcasing their state-of-the-art inventions, students from Oman, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and Arab countries will participate in the annual event, which will focus this year on sustainable applications of engineering projects. Each university is allowed to participate with a maximum of two projects, and Oman’s educational institutions are all set to impress.

Within the four-day event, students will exhibit their projects before the public, and honourable guests from both the private and public sector, including an on-stage presentation for selective projects.
According to Hasna Al Al Shuaibi, an organiser, the gathering will offer an exhibition platform that allows students to express their ideas and share them with the audience.
“Our challenge is that we have few materials in our hands, and we should find a way to create more with less,” said Abdul Wahab Al Maimani, head of the Engineering Society.
Furthermore, external organisations, businesses and local engineering societies will be able to examine what the youth thinkers offer, providing the sponsors with logo exposure and brand recognition, as a lead supporter of education and development of today’s youth.
According to the participation conditions list, which has been sent to all contesters, all projects must be prepared and presented by undergraduate students and should have a maximum number of three students.
The Engineering Society will be providing transportation to and from the university during the four days of the gathering, and will also arrange airport transportation to the hotel at time of arrival.
This year’s theme will be about sustainability in many different forms, including environmental and sustainable community service.
Participants with the best projects for specified criteria will be awarded during the closing ceremony on Wednesday.
Since its establishment in the academic year 2000-2001, the Engineering Society has successfully organised six engineering exhibitions and six engineering gatherings.
The Engineering Society is a student-run organisation that aims, with the support and supervision of the College of Engineering, to provide students with opportunities to learn, promote 21st century skills, and share their experiences and knowledge. The society organises and hosts events, such as seminars, conferences, exhibitions and workshops.
